“Sweat can appear even when someone isn’t hot or physically active because sweating is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, not just body temperature. Emotional stress, anxiety, or fear can trigger the body’s fight-or-flight response, activating sweat glands even at rest,” says David Waters, Unilever R&D Manager.
WHY CALM STATES CHANGE HOW YOU SWEAT
Not all sweat is the same. The type your body produces depends on what’s driving it.
Bivash Dasgupta, Unilever R&D Manager, explains that there are two types of sweat glands: "Eccrine sweat glands are found over most areas of the body and produce watery sweat. Their primary function is to regulate body temperature. Apocrine glands on the other hand produce an oily sweat and are found in body areas with hair follicles (armpits, groin) and they are activated by emotional response.”
Stress sweat and emotional regulation are directly connected. Apocrine sweat is thicker, protein-rich, and produces stronger odor when bacteria on your skin break it down.⁴ Cooling sweat (eccrine) is mostly water and mostly odorless. When you’re calm, apocrine activity drops, lower cortisol means less stimulus for those glands, and the sweat you produce shifts toward eccrine: less intense, less odor-prone, less noticeable. Your body still sweats for temperature control. The stress-driven, high-odor kind just reduces significantly.
WHEN TOUCH ISN’T CALMING AND OTHER PATHS TO GET THE SAME EFFECT
It’s worth being clear about something: not everyone experiences hugs as calming.
Wanted, consensual touch calms. Unwanted or forced touch does the opposite. And for anyone who prefers non-touch calming inputs, the same nervous-system shift can be triggered by other routes:
- Deep, slow breathing. Four seconds in, hold four, exhale six. This kind of pattern is one of several breathing exercises for stress sweat that activate the parasympathetic system almost identically to a hug.

- Warm water. Warm baths or showers activate similar calming pathways through skin receptors.
- Rhythmic movement. Walking, yoga, and dancing lower cortisol independently of touch, making them useful ways to manage anxiety sweating when a hug isn't an option.
