Why Movement Matters

 

Our Purpose

You move. It works.

The world is moving faster, but we are slowing down. Nearly half of people describe their behavior as “sedentary” or “lightly active,” but in reality, that number is over 60 percent.* We all could use a motivating force to counteract our tendencies to stare at screens and stay put.

As a brand designed for and dedicated to promoting movement, Degree® is working to combat sedentary habits by encouraging active, healthy lifestyles around the country. In the coming years, we’ll leverage a variety of partnerships and programs to continue this commitment to you.

 In March 2019, we joined forces with Blue Zones®, global experts in community health and well-being transformation, and launched the Made to Move grant program to provide $500,000 in funding for city projects that promote increased physical movement. Five cities will be awarded $100,000 to help their communities incorporate more movement in their everyday lives for generations to come!

Hartford, CT
(Inaugural Bike Boulevards)

Create the first three bike boulevards in Connecticut, identifying specific locations based on input from neighborhood associations and nonprofit organizations. Not only will the bike boulevards provide safe, low-speed facilities comfortable for riders of all ages and abilities, they will also provide traffic calming benefits for adjacent properties and will offer other Connecticut communities a model for transforming their own infrastructure.

 Fort Lauderdale, FL
(Trail Access)

Enhance accessibility and connections to the Flagler Greenway in a designated Transportation Equity Zone. The project will increase bike and micro-mobility parking to enhance both recreation-based and utilitarian-based active transportation opportunities. Meanwhile, wayfinding and placemaking will enhance visibility of the area and transform the space into a comfortable and inviting experience.

Jersey City, NJ
(Pavement-to-Park)

Increase the community’s awareness and understanding of the importance of active transportation through the construction of a pavement-to-park project. This opportunity aligns with the City’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic-related death and serious injuries on Jersey City Streets by 2026 through proactive community outreach and long-lasting infrastructural solutions. 

Chattanooga, TN
(Public Space Activation + Street Modifications)

Support Chattanooga Design Studio’s “Public Realm Action Plan” by funding much needed street modifications in key locations identified by a recent study on how people are using public spaces. Paired with a pilot project of other improvements, this initiative will seek to demonstrate a holistic understanding of the value of our streets as public spaces, ripe for change.

Richardson, TX
(Road Diet for the Innovation District)

The Greenville Avenue road diet will remove driving lanes and add bicycle lanes and an at-grade pedestrian crossing to better integrate the light-rail station with the planned Innovation District.
